There are endless choices of what to wear for Photoshoots. I think that a dress for a photoshoot is your best choice, and here’s why.
1. Movement
When you move your dress moves with you, it flows and therefore photographs well. Although there are some amazing pictures out there of people wearing pants or jeans, I think for family Photoshoots and maternity Photoshoots, dresses are the best!

2. Dresses are More Flattering in Pictures
Dresses, especially less form fitting options, can hide imperfections. Of course, you are beautiful just as you are, but sometimes there are certain areas that you’d rather not be showing in a static photo. There are just certain things you can’t hide in a photograph, unless you are in a dress!
You want your images to be flattering, and it’s best to choose a dress that highlights all the things you love about your body! If you’ve got a very nice back maybe choose a dress with a low cut back, those photograph so beautifully. Not crazy about your arms (I’m not), loose fitting mid to long sleeves may be your best bet. If you love your arms wear a dress that shows them off!
You get the point. You don’t want to cover yourself from head to toe and hide it all for the photoshoot. But, you do want to highlight your best features. The ones that will make you say wow when you look at your final photographs. The ones that you won’t stare at and see the things that bother you personally. I showed my arms in past photos, and in the moment, I wasn’t happy with the way I looked. I was usually about 8 months pregnant at the time, so I should have given myself some slack. But, I didn’t, and it affected how I felt about my images. Years later, when I look back, I was being silly. I still love the photos and they were beautiful and my arms weren’t as bad as I thought.
I’ve learned since then to make sure that my dress for a photoshoot is something I feel comfortable and secure in. One that will allow me to love the end results even more!
3. Dresses Make you Feel Pretty
I don’t normally wear dresses. I’m usually running after kids and bending over to help them with things, so a dress doesn’t work most days! But, in a photoshoot, a dress is the perfect thing to wear!
During your photoshoot, you’ll most likely be holding your babies on your hip and sitting down with them all. A midi to maxi length dress is perfect for those poses. Dresses drape around you and cover your legs when you sit down. They also protect you from the elements during your shoot. It’s like a blanket you wear!

4. A Dress Elevates the Look of your Final Photos
Wearing a dress takes your photoshoot to the next level. Jeans and tees are a great comfy option, and classic as well. But when you choose a dress instead, the look of your photoshoot changes from everyday to truly something special! If you are looking for images that are classic and casual, then by all means wear the jeans! It’s your photoshoot. But, if you want to elevate those final images and go for a more ethereal dreamy look, get that dress!

I’ve been much much happier with my images when I dressed everyone up for the photoshoot. It can make the process a little more stressful. There’s a lot more planning involved and convincing everyone to wear something special. But it’s worth it in the end! Your spending some serious money on some photos, and spending your precious time getting everything together, so why not make a real go at making the photos next level!
5. You can sell the dress For a photoshoot when you are done!
If you end up buying a dress for the occasion and can’t really use it again, why not sell it! I usually sell things on Facebook Marketplace but you can also use eBay or Poshmark. So, it’s a win win! You get an amazing dress for your photoshoot and most of your money back in the end.
6. You Deserve Something Special
As moms, we sometimes put ourselves last. You are important! You are worthy of the investment. The memories you are making are priceless. Give yourself permission to spoil yourself a bit. Hopefully these pictures will be shared with generations of your family.
“What is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”
Ives Saint Laurent
