There’s a chill in the air, and you’ve got your Family Photoshoot planned! Do you need some ideas for your family photoshoot outfits? Well, we’ve got you covered! Enter Family Photoshoot Outfit Formulas! Now you will know exactly what you need to create cohesive, coordinated and most of all cozy outfits that will look perfect in your Fall and Winter Family Photos!
I think it’s a little tougher to chose outfits for chilly weather. A photoshoot during the fall or winter requires more pieces to be added our outfits. Therefore, an increased amount of decisions will need to be made. And, there are more colors and styles to coordinate. I hope these formulas and links to outfits will help to make it a bit easier to get the job done! Moms make enough decisions each day as it is, right?
We are starting with our outfit formula made for toddler girls to wear in fall or winter photos. This outfit is cute, comfy and twirls just right! It will add depth, interest and movement to your final photos of your little princess, and she will love wearing it!

The Family Photoshoot Outfit Formula
You’ll need 5 pieces for this family photoshoot outfit formula. A cute cardigan, leotard, pinafore, knee-high stockings and boots. Luckily, these formulas are flexible, there will be alternative options below that you can switch out and still have an amazing looking outfit! Feel free to make these outfits your own and experiment with them…or just stick to the formula with the knowledge that it will deliver!
The Cardigan
This is the layer that adds some depth and warmth to the formula. You will have to consider the temperature on the day of the shoot when choosing this piece. We were able to get away with a long sleeve and cardigan for the 15 minutes that is took to do our mini session. But, a longer session would have required a thicker or warmer option for this piece of the outfit formula. I’ll include the original cardigan we chose in this post, but you can take a look at the Family Stylin Pinterest Page for more options.
The Leotard
This is the most switch-able item in the formula. As you can see in the picture below, we switched out the leotard for a loose turtle neck for my daughter in our 2021 Christmas Family Photos. It was very cold that day and it was necessary for added warmth. I had to just go with it, even though it wasn’t a part of my original plan, but it still turned out great. And most importantly it kept her warm enough to get through the mini session comfortably. We wouldn’t have gotten this sweet little smile if she wasn’t feeling warm and comfortable!

The Pinafore
The pinafore is the absolute most important and key ingredient to this outfit formula. A pinafore is special, it is not worn all that often. That makes it an interesting addition to your photoshoot. A pinafore also adds dimension with it’s layered skirt and the o-so-important twirlyness (totally a word)! It will add some movement to your final images, especially when the prompt your photographer give you is to twirl or dance in place.
When planning this portion of the outfit formula, make sure to choose the pinafore first! If you choose a pattern, like the gingham I chose for my daughter, you will need to choose less patterned or solid pieces to compliment it.

The Knee-High Stockings
Knee-High Stockings are the addition of serious cuteness to this family photoshoot outfit formula. Especially ruffle-top knee highs. We didn’t get any closeups of the socks unfortunately in this shoot, but knee-high socks, especially those with contrasting colors, look adorable!
You can switch out the knee-high stockings in this family photoshoot outfit formula for tights for added warmth.
The Boots
These boots were a perfect compliment to the knee-high stockings. You can play around with the style of boots here, but we were very happy with the boots we chose. They were comfortable and the perfect shade of brown. It’s important to add neutrals into each outfit your family wears so that everything blends well.
You can see the boots close up in the photo below.
Feel free to switch the boots out for a pair of Mary Janes. They will look equally as cute!

Comfort is key!
What you wear to a photoshoot needs to be comfortable. Let me repeat myself, NEEDS! If it’s not comfortable, your kids won’t wear it. If they do wear it and it’s uncomfortable, they won’t look happy and relaxed in pictures, and neither will you. The agitation and discomfort will show. So, if you want to love your images at the end, wear pieces that are comfy, cozy and feel like you!
I’m not saying wear a t-shirt and leggings to the shoot (that’s my every day outfit). Your not going to wear something you would wear every day. In fact, the clothing you choose for a photoshoot may be something you’d never wear! I never wear a midi or maxi unless I’m doing a photoshoot. But, I sure am comfortable and feel beautiful in one for a photoshoot, because I know it will elevate the final images and I choose dresses that are soft, flowy and feel good on. The same applies for your kids. Not something they would wear every day…but instead an elevated version of that but that is still comfy. Happy kids = Great Photos!
