So, you’ve convinced him to take a Christmas Family Photoshoot…and now you’ve also got to convince him to wear a specific outfit for it. I’ve got your back with this Family Photoshoot Styling Formula! And this one is for Dad!
Hubby’s are notorious for not being that enthusiastic about Family Photoshoots. But, they can get on board with the right set up. First, make sure not to book a shoot during their favorite sports event. Learned that one the hard way!
Second, try not to let him see you sweat! This applies to the kids too. You’re going to be stressed out picking the entire families outfits and getting everyone ready for the shoot. But, this is supposed to be fun! So, breath, take a break, expect less than perfection and try to remain calm and cool. The whole family will respond to your mood, so try to keep calm and style on!
Easier said that done right? I agree! That’s why I’ve made this Family Photoshoot Styling Formula for dad. To take some of the guesswork out of the process and make it less stressful! I can’t promise a happy hubby, but he will look great!
First, Let’s take some decisions off your plate…
So, I love doing Family Photoshoots with Professional Photographers. If you’ve read or followed me on social, you know that already. It’s an obsession and passion of mine.
Since I’m thinking about and prepping for Photoshoots anyways…I created Family Stylin as a resource for other moms in the same position as I. Coordinating the outfits for themselves and their family…plus all the other tasks that go along with getting ready for a Photoshoot, not to mention daily life as a mom.
It’s not an easy job, and it adds so many more decisions for your already busy busy mind to make. But, now you will know exactly what you need to create cohesive, coordinated and most of all cozy outfits that will look perfect in your Fall and Winter Family Photos!
The weather makes a difference
I think it’s a little tougher to chose outfits for chilly weather. A photoshoot during the fall or winter requires more pieces to be added to our outfits. Therefore, an increased amount of decisions will need to be made than a photoshoot is warmer weather. There are simply more colors and styles involved.
This Family Photoshoot outfit formula is made for men to wear in fall or winter photos. This outfit is simple but has just enough interest to take your final photos to the next level. Let’s get ready to take some amazing Family Photos!

The Family Photoshoot STYLING Formula for dad
You’ll need 3 pieces for this family photoshoot outfit formula. A sweater with some interesting details, black jeans, and faux leather sneakers. These formulas are flexible, there will be alternative options below that you can switch out and still have an amazing looking outfit! Feel free to make these outfits your own and experiment with them…or just stick to the formula with the knowledge that it will deliver!
The sweater
This is the layer that adds some interest and warmth to the formula. Feel free to layer underneath for colder temps. We were able to get away with just a sweater for the 15 minutes that is took to do our mini session. But, a longer session would have required a thicker or warmer option for this piece of the outfit formula. I’ll include the original sweater we chose at the bottom of this post, but you can take a look at the Family Stylin Pinterest Page for more options. This sweater was our second choice as the first choice sold out too quickly.
I am not a professional photographer, but I’ve studied outfits that look great in photos, and more texture usually beats a flat color. I edit my own phone and DSLR photos that I take using Adobe Lightroom, and the outfits they wear make a big difference when editing. A sweater like the one my husband is wearing below adds something special to the final look.
The front buttons and shoulder details photograph better than a plain flat colored sweater would.

The Jeans
This is the easiest part of the formula.. .Your husband probably already has a black pair of jeans in his closet. Make sure they aren’t faded, and really any dark color will do for this formula. Black slacks will work as well.
If you have to buy some new pants for the photoshoot, at least you know he will get a lot of use out of them as they are a closet staple.

The sneakers
You also have a lot of flexibility with this part of the formula. Guys are so much easier to dress! We went with a pleather sneaker because they have a fancier look. They shine a bit and are a better option that a plain sneaker. But, you can choose some boots instead and it will still work. You can see the shine in the photos editing in black and white the best.
